Dating someone with sensory processing disorder by Aaron Tanner

Valentine's Day is coming up soon. Although there are a lot of resources about dating someone on the Autism Spectrum, information about being in a romantic relationship with a person with a sensory processing disorder, which is often a side effect of an Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a lot more limited.

One of the reasons I am incredibly hesitant to have a girlfriend is because of the overstimulation factor that is often involved in those types of relationships. For those going out with someone on the spectrum, understanding how sensory defects affect your partner can go towards a lasting romance as many with Aspergers have a sensory processing disorder.

A suggestion I was given for a possible first date idea if I ever do decide to give it a try is going to the park and feeding the ducks. I would feel more comfortable with this idea of a date than going to a crowded restaurant where the noise and music often get to me. Along those lines, perhaps a walk on a greenway is a good date idea if weather conditions are favorable.
