Merrimack Hall - Happy Camp

Join us during the month of June for our half-day performing arts camp for those with special needs, aged 3 or older. Energetic campers will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities including music, theatre, dance, and arts & crafts. Each week of camp has a unique theme, culminating in a performance to showcase the skills learned during camp.

Happy Camp is open to any child, whatever their diagnosis may be. At Merrimack Hall, we believe our students are only limited by the labels society chooses to assign them. We never turn away a student because of the nature of their disability.

Merrimack Hall welcomes students of all ability levels into the arts.

Effective Communication

SUMMER PROGRAMS

Summer is an excellent time for your child to focus on speech, language, reading and social skills.  In addition to our traditional sessions, we offer group and individual therapy sessions that target specific areas of need.

S.U.P.E.R. FRIENDS CAMP AND GROUPS

Does your child have difficulty making and keeping friends, or learning how to read and respond appropriately to social cues?  Picking up on social cues, both verbal and non-verbal, is a skill with which many children and adolescents struggle.  These struggles can cause awkward and frustrating situations for our children, often leading to anxiety, lack of self control, and anger.  Our week-long S.U.P.E.R. Friends camp and/or ongoing groups can help.  These social groups are age-specific and concentrate on:

Social language skill building

Understanding social cues

Peer interaction

Encouragement and empathy

Respectfulness and appropriateness

Within these groups, kids are taught to use and understand appropriate body language and facial expressions, initiate and respond to interactions such as play and conversations, take turns, problem solving, and negotiations.  The groups are interactive and fun, and teach kids to handle situations they encounter at home, at school, and during extracurricular activities.

UCP of Mobile provides four weeks of traditional summer camp activities for more than 320 children and adults with disabilities. By adapting the equipment and/or the rules of play, our camp is able to offer each camper the opportunity to swim, play ball, ride horses, and more.

Camp SMILE provides more than just physical activities. It also enables campers to meet dozens of other people whose abilities and life experiences are similar to their own.

Most importantly though, UCP’s Camp SMILE offers a rare opportunity for campers of all ages to spend a week away from their families or group homes – a once a year occurrence for many of our campers.

Although some of the campers have no disability, the overwhelming majority of them require one-on-one supervision. In fact, Camp SMILE is one of approximately a dozen camps in the nation that accepts campers regardless of the severity of their disability or inability to pay. Our unique one-to-one camper-to-counselor ratio helps campers adjust to life outside of their normal settings, and the 24-hour per day presence of a Registered Nurse & Paramedic helps to ensure everyone’s safety.

Children do not have to meet any specific criteria to be eligible for camp, but a completed application must be submitted.

UCP offers four sessions of Camp SMILE. Each session is limited to 75 campers. The cost for the camp is $385 per camper. However, there are a limited number of needs-based “Camperships” available.

For more information about Camp SMILE, please visit our website www.campsmilemobile.com or contact the director, Matrisza Alvarez at (251) 479-4900.
